It’s one of the most exciting weeks of the year and it’s almost here! Consider with me five reasons to be excited about VBS:
1. Congregational teamwork
It is one of the best works of the Westside congregation because of the number of people that get to be involved in so many wonderful ways. From the youngest to the oldest among us, there is something for everyone to do. When you consider the letters written to local congregations in the New Testament, the church in a universal sense is certainly present, but the work on the local level is emphasized, too. For example, when Paul was writing First Corinthians, he wrote, “To the church of God which is at Corinth.” These were precious saints who belonged to God (spiritually), but lived in Corinth (physically). What a blessing to get to work as God’s people with God’s people in a way that seeks to honor Him!
2. Joy in the faces of children
My goal has been to get back into some kind of physical shape to be able to lead the songs each night of VBS – because it’s the best seat in the house to get to see the joy of young people singing and being excited to learn more about Jesus! What an opportunity to continue to introduce young people to Jesus and to see their excitement in being together, in learning, and in singing to Him. The Lord said, “Do not hinder the children from coming to Me,” (Matthew 19:13-15). Please come and see their joy and please do not deny your children an opportunity to be closer to the Lord!
3. Unity and fellowship with sister congregations
This area of west Texas does an exceptional job of supporting sister congregations in various efforts like VBS. As the people of God, may we be excited to see brothers and sisters and take advantage of every opportunity to be together. Many brethren will be present at VBS with their children and it does bring much excitement. May we remember to ‘return the favor’ by supporting them in coming weeks.
4. Community outreach
VBS is one of the greatest evangelistic efforts of the year. I have had many of our young people tell me how excited they are for some of their friends to come. They have been extending invitations and really hope for many to come. How many invitations have you extended? Remember that while we may be focused on children, there are classes for all ages each night. This is an opportunity for “kids” of all ages to be present!
5. Our labor is not in vain
While the week has not even arrived, you can anticipate the way you will be feeling on Friday night, can’t you? There is tired and then there is “VBS tired.” Friends, we have an opportunity in front of us to be reminded of the victory that is available in Jesus. Paul spoke of that victory in 1 Corinthians 15:57 and then in the next sentence he said, “Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.” Be excited for an opportunity to labor. Please keep all these efforts in your prayers and may the Lord bless us in teaching and being reminded of the victory available in Jesus!
