It is unfortunate that the word “edification” is a term that’s fallen into disuse. Every thoughtful Christian should recognize that God’s people should strengthen each other spiritually and build up one another in the faith (Ephesians 4:16). That’s what biblical edification is. For one thing, it’s a natural outgrowth of evangelism – when people come to Jesus in faith, repentance and baptism, they need additional attention, nurturing and instruction to continue growing in Christ (see 2 Peter 1:5-11; 3:17-18). For another, a church is only as healthy and sound as its willingness and commitment to do the work Christ desires it to do!
The importance of edification in the church is seen in that –
(1). It is something members are to strive to excel in (1 Corinthians 14:12).
(2). It is held up as a purpose for our assembling together (1 Corinthians 14:26).
(3). It is a goal of ministry and serving in the body of Christ (2 Corinthians 10:8; 13:10; Ephesians 4:11-12).
(4). Every member ought to contribute to it (Ephesians 4:16).
(5). Every relationship in Christ revolves around it (1 Corinthians 10:23-24; Romans 15:2; 1 Thessalonians 5:11).
(6). It involves our words and actions as Christians (2 Corinthians 12:19; Ephesians 4:29).
You know edification is something good when considering what helps in producing it: faith (Jude 20) and love (1 Corinthians 8:1) are essential while peace (Romans 14:19) and harmony (Acts 9:31) also are needed. Of course, the word of God (Acts 20:32) and positive Christ-like examples (1 Corinthians 8:10) are keys too.
There are far worse things to be known for in life than being a Christian who wants to strengthen others spiritually and build them up in the faith! Ask yourself these questions: (1) What can I do to build up the congregation here? (2) Think of specific people. Ask yourself, “What can I specifically do to encourage this person in the Lord?” (3) Maybe ask someone, “How can I pray for you?”
Eternity will be full of people who sought to build others up in the faith. And earth is more full of God’s grace and goodness too!
