It is a song that has brought smiles to the faces of singers for years – exactly 100 years to be more precise. The song was written in 1920 by Mrs. A.S. Bridgewater and it is titled, “How Beautiful Heaven Must Be.” Do you recall the first words of the first verse and chorus?
We read of a place that’s called heaven,
It’s made for the pure and the free;
These truths in God’s word He has given,
How beautiful heaven must be.
How beautiful heaven must be,
Sweet home of the happy and free;
Fair haven of rest for the weary,
How beautiful heaven must be.
A little girl was once staring at the sky at night and as she looked to the stars said, “Daddy, if heaven is so pretty on the wrong side, think of what it must look like on the right side!” Oh friend, think with me for a moment about the right side of heaven and the view in God’s house!
Whose home is it?
It is the home of our Father.
In John 14:2, Jesus said, “In My Father’s house are many mansions…” How much time and attention, then, deserves the thought that the same God that Jesus called ‘Father’ is the same God that looks to me as one of His children! 1 John 3:1, “Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God!” We are sons of God and joint-heirs with Jesus (Galatians 3:26-27). As His children, we have the hope of going to be with Him for eternity!
It is the home of our Savior.
It is a favorite expression of Peter as found in Second Peter four times – Jesus our Lord and Savior! It was for the purpose of saving mankind from his sins that Jesus came. The angel told Joseph, “And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins,” Matthew 1:21. Heaven is His home, as He now sits on the right hand of the Father (Acts 7:55-56). Because of Jesus, heaven will one day be the home of the faithful, too!
It is the home of our Helper.
Jesus promised the Apostles that the Helper would come to guide them into all truth (John 16:13). We have the word of truth that has been delivered through the Holy Spirit available for us today to lead us home to be with Him. All Scripture is given by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit; holy men of God were moved by the Holy Spirit to write that which we have and hold today (2 Timothy 3:16; 2 Peter 1:20-21). Heaven is the prepared home of the faithful and without the Holy Spirit, there is no way to know – praise God for His sword, the word of God (Ephesians 6:17)!
