But thanks be to God, who in Christ always leads us in triumphal procession, and through us spreads the fragrance of the knowledge of him everywhere (2 Corinthians 2:14)
Few things in life are more needed in life than an appropriate sense of commitment. During times of discouragement and difficulty, how we need to focus on the priority, importance and place of commitment to Christ. Few passages explain the nature of commitment better than Paul’s words through the Holy Spirit in 2 Corinthians 2:14.
Commitment is all about Genuine Gratitude. Note that Paul begins the verse with the words “But thanks.” Despite being somewhat discouraged himself, thinking about Jesus filled the apostle with an overwhelming sense of thanksgiving. And it should us as well (Psalm 103:2; Ephesians 5:20; 1 Thessalonians 5:18).
Commitment concerns a Worthy Object. Paul gives thanks “to God.” When one begins to think about the Person, nature and work of God it’s hard to remain discouraged very long. As Psalm 145:3 says, “Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised, and his greatness is unsearchable.”
Commitment is intimately connected to Spiritual Location. In this case, the location is “in Christ” – a phrase Paul uses about 164 times in his letters. The realm or sphere in which he focuses and lives is in Christ. Being “in Christ” changes everything for Paul! Our words, thoughts and actions ought to be transformed because we are in Christ.
Commitment has to do with Appropriate Timing. The text states that commitment “always” is appropriate and timely. It’s always time to reflect greater love, commitment and service to our Lord and Savior!
Commitment is all about Cooperative Action. Notice first what God does. God through Christ “leads us in triumphal procession” and “spreads the fragrance of the knowledge” of God “everywhere.”
We get to partake in the victory and mission of God! But also notice how we cooperate with God. We follow Him. We speak and live so as to honor Him. We desire to humbly be a “fragrant aroma” that helps others better take in an awesome God.
