Grasping God’s Glory

Grasping God’s Glory

There is not a subject in all of Scripture that will do more to cause us to love and live for God than a study of His glory. We either live to our own glory, or to the glory of another – or to the glory of God. To do the will of God to the glory of God by the grace of God is what life is all about! (cf 1 Corinthians 10:31). We’ve been studying this theme recently in Bible class, and thinking about it caused me to appreciate how many of our songs of praise stress God’s glory and encourage us to pursue His glory to a greater degree. Here’s just a few to think about.

To God Be the Glory – Fanny J. Crosby (1875). “Praise the Lord, Praise the Lord, Let the earth hear His voice! Praise the Lord, Praise the Lord, Let the people rejoice! O come to the Father, thru Jesus the Son, and give Him the glory, great things He hath done.”

We Praise Thee, O God – William McKay (1863). “All glory and praise to the God of all grace, Who has bought us and sought us and guided our ways.”

A Charge to Keep I Have – Charles Wesley (1762). “A charge to keep I have, A God to glorify; A never-dying soul to save, And fit it for the sky.”

Fairest Lord Jesus – Richard S. Willis (1850). “Fairest Lord Jesus! Ruler of all nature! O Thou of God and man the Son! Thee will I cherish, Thee will I honor, Thou my soul’s glory, joy and crown.”

We Shall Assemble – Twila Paris (1991). “Glory and honor and dominion unto the Lamb, unto the King, Oh, Hallelujah, Hallelujah! We sing the song of the redeemed!”

Ten Thousand Reasons – Matt Redman and Jonas Myrin (2013). “Bless the Lord, o my soul, o my soul, Worship His holy name. Sing like never before, o my soul, I’ll worship Your holy name. You’re rich in love and You’re slow to anger, Your name is great and Your heart is kind; For all Your goodness, I will keep on singing, Ten thousand reasons for my heart to find!

Great Is Thy Faithfulness – Thomas O. Chisholm (1923). “Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth, Thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide; Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow, Blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside! Great is Thy Faithfulness! Great is Thy Faithfulness! Morning by morning new mercies I see; All I have needed Thy hand hath provided; Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me!”
