The familiar hymn with the above title was written in 1831 by a religious man in Great Britan, William Bathurst. As we prepare to move from one year into the next, perhaps it would be a great time to reflect and to plan. How is your faith now as compared to this time last year? Do you find your love and trust in God to be greater? To ask, “Is my knowledge of God and His precious word deeper and more complete than a year ago?” And to consider the year ahead, if the Lord wills, “How can I grow closer to Jesus in the coming year?” Or, “What can I do to have greater faith and to help my family to have a greater faith this time next year?” Wouldn’t it be great if we could, again if the Lord wills, look back in one year and see a faith that has not shrunk, but has grown? Consider the four stanzas of this song briefly with me and one great request to make from God concerning your faith in the next year:
Verse 1: God help me to have a faith that will not shrink! Hebrews 10:39; 13:5-6
“O for a faith that will not shrink, tho’ pressed by every foe, that will not tremble on the brink of any earthly woe.”
Verse 2: God help me to have a faith that will not complain! Philippians 2:14-15; Mark 9:23-24
“That will not murmur or complain beneath the chastening rod, but in the hour of grief or pain, will lean upon its God.”
Verse 3: God help me to have a faith that will not doubt! Matthew 10:28; 21:21-22
“A faith that shines more bright and clear when tempests rage without; that when in danger knows no fear, in darkness feels no doubt.
Verse 4: God help me to have a faith that always looks to You! Luke 17:5-6; Romans 10:17; Mark 10:29-30
“Lord, give us such a faith as this; and then, what – e’er may come, we’ll taste e’en here the hallowed bliss of an eternal home.”
